Karel Teige (1900-1951) is one of the most prominent figures of the Czech avant-garde, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions as an art theorist, critic, and designer. Teige’s writings spanned literature, architecture, graphic design, and cinema, leaving a significant mark on modernism. In 1920, Teige co-founded Devětsil, a collective of avant-gardist artists, writers, and intellectuals. His work was also remarkably influential in the editorial field, since he contributed to numerous periodicals and even worked as the editor of some journals, such as “ReD” (“Revue Devětsilu”, 1927-1930). Teige’s interest in film theory is testified by the fact that he saw cinema as the true expression of modernity. Conceiving artistic expressions as forms of ‘poesis’, ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’, his analysis spans different fields, from literature to architecture. His main influences were French, American, and Soviet cinema. Through his essays and collaborations with filmmakers, he explored cinema’s capacity to challenge narrative conventions, embrace abstraction, and convey surrealist visions.
