Ieremia Aizenshtok (1900-1980) was a Ukrainian literary critic. He graduated from Kharkiv University in 1921, where he had the opportunity to study with Oleksandr Bilec’kyj and to be a member of “Khakiv circle of formalists”. His main contribution was in the field of Ukrainian literature, in particular with regards to 19th-century writers like I. Kotlyarevskyi, M. Kotsyubynskyi, I. Franko, T. Shevchenko, and M. Gogol. He also worked on Russian literature, with special attention to N. Nekrasov, I. Turgenev, G. Uspenskii, and N. Chernyshevskii. He was the author of the first complete edition of Taras Shevchenko’s diaries. He is considered one of the main voices of Ukrainian formalism.
