ReD: Art is Dead, Long Live Art!

Published
2019-12-20

Abstract

The article will examine the periodical ReD (1927 – 1931) as a reflection of the theories developed by the Czech avantgarde group Devětsil and particularly by its leader Karel Teige. The analysis of the contents published on ReD is aimed at reconstructing the role of art in the complex synthesis of constructivism and humanism characterizing this movement. The article will firstly focus on individual disciplines and their aesthetic and historic interpretation; it will then move to the contribution of art in freeing humanity from social and psychological oppression, thus realizing poetism as a way of life. Lastly, it will try to evaluate whether ReD managed to have an all-encompassing scope on modern culture as it claimed.
