Author Biography
Michail Gasparov (1935-2005) was a Soviet and Russian scholar, member of the so-called "Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School" and especially renowned for his studies on classical philology and Russian versification. Among his major works: Antičnaja literaturnaja basnja (Fedr i Babrij) [Ancient literary fable (Phaedrus and Babrius), 1971], Sovremennyj russkij stich. Metrika i ritmika [Contemporary Russian Versification. Metrics and Rhythm, 1974], Očerk istorii russkogo sticha [An Overview on Russian Versification, 1984], Očerk istorii evropejskogo sticha (1989; English transl.: A History of European Versification, 1996). Moreover, he was awarded the Andrej Belyj Prize for his book Zapiski i vypiski [Notes and excerpts, 2001].
