Vladimir Toporov (1928-2005), PhD and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was a Russian philologist, member of the Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School. Among his research interests: Slavic studies, Indology and Indo-European studies. Along with Vjačeslav Ivanov, he developed the theory of the “basic myth”. He wrote countless essays and books on literature, folklore and myth. He translated the Dhammapada into Russian.
